While building a 1-0 lead over Wales in the first half of their Group B opener at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, the new and inexperienced American squad showed no signs of nerves. The Dragons were behind 1–0 in the 82nd minute until Gareth Bale scored on a penalty kick to preserve a 1–1 draw.
U.S. Coach Gregg Berhalter’s aggressive strategy resulted in a goal in the 36th minute. 22-year-old striker Tim Weah redirected a brilliant through-ball assist from Christian Pulisic past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to give the United States the lead. Earlier in the match, the United States had a couple of opportunities that were just wide of the mark.
Josh Sargent’s header off a cross from Antonee Robinson nearly gave the United States (who fielded their youngest starting lineup at the World Cup since 1990) the lead in the 10th minute, but the ball went wide of the post.
In the second half, Wales played like a totally different team, and the Americans were put on their heels at several moments, making it seem certain that the Dragons would score and tie the game. U.S. keeper Matt Turner saved the U.S. lead in the 64th minute by tipping a diving header from Ben Davies over the crossbar, but he was unable to stop Bale’s penalty shoot after Walker Zimmerman was called for a foul in the box.
After group favorite England’s 6-2 thrashing of Iran earlier in the day, both teams were under intense pressure to come away with three points. On Friday, Wales will take on Iran as Group B action resumes. The United States troops are getting ready to battle England.

After a slow start, Wales has dominated the second half. Including added time, these two teams have less than 10 minutes to decide a winner.
