On Monday, the Dutch scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time, against the grain, and after wasting numerous other opportunities. Still, it was enough to secure a win over a resolute Senegalese squad that proved it had the quality to advance from a challenging Group A despite missing star attacker Sadio Mane.
The Netherlands are currently in first place in their group after a 2-0 victory over Senegal at Al Thumama Stadium. In the 84th minute, the Dutch took the lead on a header by rising sensation Cody Gakpo, who made a wonderfully timed run across the box to flick a pass from Frenkie de Jong into the net.
As time expired in the 99th minute, Davy Klaassen pounced on a rebound to ensure that the Dutch would remain in first place in Group A alongside Ecuador, who had earlier defeated Qatar.

First Half Filled With Dutch opportunities
After a lively, adventurous first half that was ripe with chances for the Dutch, the second half slowed down and was leaning against Senegal until Gakpo scored. Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert, making his first appearance for his country, stopped a Boulaye Dia drive from inside the box and blocked a wicked strike from Idrissa Gana Gueye in the 73rd minute to preserve the scoreless draw.
Memphis Depay replaced Vincent Janssen when the latter was injured, he had a tight hamstring and immediately boosted the Netherlands’ attack. Although the Dutch attempted an offensive, the resilient Senegalese defense held them off.
Second Half Ended with the Victory of the Netherlands
There was a lot of action (and orange) at the Senegal end throughout the first half, as the Dutch probed relentlessly and created many scoring opportunities. Their girth made an impressive first impression.
Ismaila Sarr, a Senegalese forward, provided offensive firepower in the first half while Sadio Mane was out of action, and he had the greatest chance of the half. A corner kick would have been on the cards for Sarr’s curling right-footed shot if not for the intervention of center-back Virgil van Dijk.
