With a convincing 6-2 victory against Iran in Group B’s first match, England did its best to allay any legitimate concerns about its World Cup participation.
Iran made their most significant on-field statement prior to the opening whistle by refusing to sing the team’s national anthem in an apparent protest, amid demonstrations in Iran and calls for the team to be disqualified from the World Cup. However, Team Melli was undoubtedly outmatched after the opening kick against a disciplined England team.
In a match that went into 24 minutes of stoppage time due to a combination of goals scored and players getting injured, the Three Lions scored three goals before and after halftime. Arsenal star Bukayo Saka led the way with two goals, and captain Harry Kane contributed two assists. The game was won by the Three Lions.
Early in the game, England set the tone by controlling the ball often while Iran sat back. This pattern continued for the rest of the game. When Harry Maguire seemed to be pushed to the ground by an Iranian defender at a corner in the third minute, England cried out for a penalty, but play continued.

Saka’s Powerful Performance
The driving force behind everything excellent England achieved was 21-year-old Bukayo Saka. He established the tone straight away, scored twice, and created a ton of problems by cutting in from the right. In their new 4-3-3 formation, England was hungry, more dynamic, and sharper, while also showing a high level of comfort. Harry Kane seems to create from a deeper position and Saka, Sterling, Mason Mount, and Jude Bellingham advancing from midfield seem to benefit most from this.
Although England’s performance was highly balanced, they will face tougher difficulties in their last two group games. As England was considerably more of a counter-attacking squad in a 4-2-3-1 configuration, teams will look to sit back and soak up pressure, which previously caused England problems. With Rashford, Wilson, Grealish, and Foden coming off the bench, what a tremendous group of alternatives Gareth Southgate has to pick from as England can now win the ball back higher up the pitch and combine in the final third thanks to this new formation.
